Frontdesk vs OnCrew for Home-Service Contractors
Affiliate disclosure: TradeCall Lab may earn a commission from Rosie or HighLevel links. Paid relationships do not determine product fit. Read our disclosure.
Frontdesk and OnCrew can both answer contractor calls, but they are not priced or designed the same way. Frontdesk is a broader AI front-office platform billed around voice minutes; OnCrew is contractor-specific and publishes call-count tiers.
| Area | Frontdesk | OnCrew |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | $99/mo; $79/mo annual billing | $49/mo |
| Included usage | 200 voice minutes | 100 calls |
| Trade specialization | Home-services workflows published; broad SMB platform | Built for 13 home-service trades |
| Booking | Live calendar booking is a core published capability | Appointment-request capture / Google Calendar handoff; contractor retains dispatch decisions |
| Automation | Broad CRM/calendar/Zapier/API/webhook stack | Contractor-oriented handoff; Housecall Pro direct API path for eligible accounts plus webhook workflows |
Price cannot be compared without call duration
One OnCrew “call” can be short or long; Frontdesk meters voice minutes. A shop with 100 five-minute calls has very different economics from one with 100 ninety-second calls. Put a real month of call logs into the comparison before choosing on headline price.
Decision frame
Investigate OnCrew first if you are a small contractor and want contractor-specific intake with simple per-call tiers. Investigate Frontdesk first if live calendar booking and broader front-office automation are central. Neither conclusion replaces hands-on testing.

The two buying situations
A business wants a broader front-office workflow rather than only a phone transcript. A contractor wants trade-oriented intake with a per-call cost model.
| Decision axis | Frontdesk | OnCrew |
|---|---|---|
| Requirement to verify | Verify the quoted calendar and CRM operations, included voice usage and any automation charges. A long integration list does not prove that a specific record is written correctly. | Check the billable-call definition, repeated caller handling and the exact field-service handoff available to your account. Contractor positioning does not establish scheduling authority. |
| Proposed acceptance test | Request a booking, update an existing customer and reject the first transfer; inspect the actual calendar and CRM record. | Make a repeat request, report an urgent issue and provide an address outside territory; inspect categorization and dispatch wording. |
| Performance evidence | Controlled calls pending | Controlled calls pending |
Normalize the same workload
Use a single call log for both quotes: answered calls, mean billable minutes, unique callers, bookings and transfers. Ask each provider to calculate the same normal and peak month. Include any platform fee, connector, extra staff escalation and setup. An equal entry price can cover very different work.
Run a paired exception test
Request a booking, update an existing customer and reject the first transfer; inspect the actual calendar and CRM record. Make a repeat request, report an urgent issue and provide an address outside territory; inspect categorization and dispatch wording. Use the same caller wording and required output fields. If one product needs middleware, include that connector in its test and cost rather than evaluating a partial workflow.
Decision boundary
Investigate Frontdesk when: A business wants a broader front-office workflow rather than only a phone transcript. Investigate OnCrew when: A contractor wants trade-oriented intake with a per-call cost model. Neither is a winner until required booking, routing and record-writing gates pass. Check the wider comparison database if neither workflow fits.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the cheaper usable option?
Ask both providers for a quote against the same workload and required actions. Base prices alone are insufficient; implementation and exception handling can change the result.
Is this a tested performance comparison?
No. It compares documented operating models and proposed buyer tests. TradeCall Lab has not completed a comparable controlled call battery for these products.
